Ash Wednesday, February 17th begins the season of Lent. This 40 day season is set apart on the Christian calendar as a time of repentance, fasting, generosity, and prayer. It's a season of re-orienting ourselves that prepares us for resurrection. Kirkwood Methodist Church has plans and activities to engage and challenge you during Lent. Come and worship with KUMC as we explore the new sermon series "Blueprint for Hope", as we prepare to build hope following the plans that Jesus left for us. All are invited!
Here are some fun things to keep you actively engaged during Lent, through daily devotions, outdoor activities, and mission projects!
We have a Lent package filled with activities for you! Drive-thru KUMC's parking lot on Wednesday, February 24th from 5 - 7 pm to pick up a packet. It includes:
- A Lenten Devotional Book
- An Outdoors Guide for Lent - A 40-hour adventure to connect body, mind & spirit with meditations, prayers, outdoor activities, places to visit in STL, yoga, mission activities, and crafts.
An Egg-stra Special Egg Hunt for Neighbors Mission Activity! (See more on that below)
A jelly bean prayer complete with jelly beans!
Let your neighbor know that they are an "Egg-stra Special Person" with this Lent mission activity. You'll find a bag of ten plastic Easter Eggs that you are to fill with notes to tell your neighbor why you appreciate them, or simple words of kindness like, "Smile" or "God Loves you & so do I" to brighten their day. You can include treats in the eggs too if you like. Then secretly hide the eggs in their yard and hang the bag on their front door to let them know they have been "egged". There is a sign in the kit to put on your front door, and a sign for the neighbor to post too. See how far this act of love at Easter time can travel in your neighborhood as more and more "Egg-stra Special Person" signs are posted!
Provide a holiday meal, groceries, and some Easter joy to a local family in need. Recipients will be those who received assistance from KUMC’s Covid Fund and/or attended the food giveaways. Each recipient will also receive a $25 grocery gift card to shop for perishables. Help KUMC reach a goal of providing food to 100 families this Easter.
Items to include in the Food Box (total cost = approx. $30) are listed in the picture below.
- Register on this Google Form to let Mission Director Julie Sherwood know you are participating in the Easter Box Project.
- Feel free to personalize your box and include items such as Easter/spring paper products, decorations, treats, etc. The Dollar Store has many inexpensive options.
- Return your box to KUMC on Saturday, March 13th from 10 am-noon. Volunteers will be available to remove the box from your car. If you are unable to attend at this time, please place your box in the donation tub outside the KUMC doors (Monday -Thursday, 9:00 am - 3:00 pm). Donation deadline is Saturday, March 13.
- Alternatively, you can support this project by making a financial contribution via Realm. Simply choose “Food Pantry” from the drop-down menu.

Hope isn’t just something we feel-- it’s something we build. During this season let's construct it together, using the blueprints that Jesus left us. Through his journey to the cross, Jesus gives us a blueprint for what resurrection can look like right here through KUMC. Prepare to be invited to risk, to give, and to serve in new ways, as we build a new kind of church -- a place of lived resurrection hope for our community and our world.
